U13 Representative Development Programme 2023

Over the past 5 years, the Hawke’s Bay under 13 Representative Development programmes have had incredible talent and large attendance at musters and trials, and with the continual growth of our sport, we expect this to continue.

To address any future player drop-offs and keep our players involved in the game for as long as possible, we have restructured the programme with the aspiration of keeping our participation numbers high and bridging the large skill development gap, with the focus of providing a ‘Fun and positive experience’ for all.

3 Phase Approach

We have reshaped the format of the U13 development programme for 2023. This opportunity will still cultivate positive experiences but will also provide the essential development to extend our players and teach them valuable sport-specific and general movement skills.

The U13 programme has been broken into 3 phases, where each phase provides skill development, competitive court time opportunities and both development and competitive tournament experiences for players and coaches.

What does this look like…

In the year 2023, U13 age group athletes will be given an opportunity to play over 3 terms.

PHASE 1 (Term 1): Basketball Pacific NZ hosts an annual Mel Young Tournament, over the long easter weekend. Basketball Hawke's Bay will conduct musters for players who wish to play in the tournament in February. Depending on coach and player availability, we will send two teams of each gender to this tournament and will potentially send a third boys or girls team depending on training facilities available, player pool, depth of talent, coaching resources, and other factors.

Each team will be provided one training per week, leading up to the Mel Young Classic.

PHASE 2 (Term 2): Under 13-year group, term competition. Details to come.

PHASE 3 (Term 3): Basketball New Zealand host the Under 13 Regional Tournament in the second week of the October School Holidays every year. Basketball Hawke's Bay is in the Central Zone (Lower North Island). Basketball Hawke's Bay will conduct trials for players who wish to play in this tournament in July. Depending on coach and player availability, we will send two teams of each gender to this tournament and will potentially send a third boys or girls team depending on training facilities available, player pool, depth of talent, coaching resources, and other factors.

Each team will be provided 1 training per week, and a second session depending on court availability.

Team Structure | Phase 1 & 2

Basketball Hawkes Bay will take a stepped approach to the team structure for the under-13 representative development teams. This will no longer consist of an A, B, C model. Hawkes Bay will still select an “A” team for the U13 Central Regional tournament, this team will just be known as the Hawkes Bay U13 Boys or Girls team.

The model we will be adopting is a Draft model, where at the conclusion of the last muster/trial, coaches who have expressed interest to coach a team will come together and select their teams in rounds. By moving to this model, we intend to create purposeful development games (reduce blowout leads), bring higher opportunities to compete in a training environment, and further develop player characteristics.

An example of the Draft model is, the first round (selection), coach E will select first, then coach F, then coach G. Once the first round is completed then the second round will start with coach F selecting first, then coach G and last is coach E, and so on. The order of coach selection will be determined at the time.

Once teams of 10 have been selected, BBHB will notify all athletes and then wait for their acceptance. In the unlikely chance a player declines the team, that coach may pick again from those who are still on the list.

Note: The selection order is to remain confidential.

Team Structure | Phase 3

Basketball Hawkes Bay will send registrations to all Under 13 players currently within our database and post on our website and social media links for those interested in playing in this competition. All players who register will then be arranged into teams through a similar ‘Draft model’ process to Phases 1 & 2. We intend to create purposeful development games (reduce blowout leads), bring higher opportunities to compete in a game environment, and further develop player characteristics. Players will then be notified via email of their team, and this will also be posted on our website and social media links. Teams are final.

A head coach will be provided for each team on the day. Coaches will be here for the same purpose, to develop their skills in the game of basketball.

Muster & Trial process

Basketball Manager – Pathways & Coaching will lead trials with on-court support coaches.

All head coaches will be required to attend trials for the purpose of observation only. You will be given a list of all athletes and then asked to provide feedback at the conclusion of the trial.

Draft selections are to be completed at the conclusion of trials.
